Flash games are definitely the finest way to waste time in the office. Here are 7 of the best.
Portal
Back when Valve first announced their Portal game, based on a flash game they saw, two fanboys decided to make their own 2d version of the game. The result? A fun side-scrolling puzzler that’ll keep you coming back.
Metal Slug Flash
A fan-made rehash of various highlights from games in the Metal Slug series. Metal Slug is side-scrolling fun at its best, with fast, “Holy Crud!” shoot-em-up moments combined with great humor. This games makes for great pick up and play and is challenging enough for return visits.
N
N is a deep and challenging puzzler that will have you saying, “Just one more try!” dozens of times. The premise is simple enough: Get your ninja from the entrance to the exit in a single room. But rough terrain, proximity mines, laser-guided missles and more all stand in your way.
Robokill
Robokill has the best of both worlds: Simple, responsive controls combined with RPG elements (compelling story, armor and weapon upgrades, etc.). It’s a fun top-down shooter that requires a bit more investment in time to enjoy, but is a blast to play through.
Bejeweled
Bejeweled started the puzzle flash game movement that is so prominent today. That alone makes it worth giving a try. There are versions of Bejeweled available for purchase; but you can pick it up and play right now.
Alien Hominid
The Grandaddy of flash games is Alien Hominid. It was the first that was so successful, it made its way to full retail on the Nintendo Gamecube, and later to XBLA. As challenging a side-scroller as you’ll find, Alien Hominid is filled with rich hand-drawn art and offbeat humor to keep you moving through it.
Quake Live
No flash game has developed an online community like Quake Live has. Last year when John Carmack announced he was going to be making Quake III Arena available online as a flash game, you could hear snickers in the crowd. Less than a year later, nobody’s laughing – they’re all too busy fragging. Quake Live offers all of the maps and weapons of Quake III Arena, along with game lobbies, leaderboards, and more.
