Even a decade after its release, Counter Strike remains one of the
most popular games on the Internet. Through a seemingly endless series
of updates and user-created content, the game has managed to stay fresh
while always sticking to its original award-winning formula. One of the
biggest changes has been its integration into Steam - Valve's
multiplayer match-making and content distribution service.
1. Download and launch Steam. It is free to download Counter Strike and is now required to access its multiplayer component.
2. Select the "My Games" tab in the center of the Steam Client. Click the "Activate a product on Steam" tab.
3. Enter the CD key when prompted. If you have a retail version of
Counter Strike, enter the key that came with the packaging. If not, you
will have the option of purchasing a new key.
4. Launch Counter Strike after it has finished installing. On the
main menu, click "Browse" to see a listing of the servers available.
5. Double click the server you want to join. The game will start
immediately if you have the necessary files. Some servers use files
(maps, character skins, etc) not included with the game. The game will
automatically download those files for you when you try to join.
